Established in 2007, the Sylvia O. Richardson Hall of Honor in the IDA Headquarters building in Baltimore, recognizes special achievements, contributions and efforts of many individuals in the field as well as others whose lives have been affected by dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
Sylvia Onesti Richardson, M.D., pediatrician and professor, has dedicated her life and career to the study and treatment of language-based learning disabilities. A true pioneer herself, Dr. Richardson's background in speech and language, learning disabilities and medicine has proven to be a source of wisdom and counsel to organizations world-wide for the last half-century.
An everlasting honor to Dr. Richardson, The Hall was created by Mrs. Joy Culverhouse, a close personal friend whose friendship with Dr. Richardson has spanned many years.

The Sylvia O. Richardson Hall of Honor is the first thing visitors see as they enter IDA Headquarters office in Baltimore, Maryland. Funds raised by the sale of the bricks, leaves and plaques help IDA continue to promote literacy through research, education and advocacy while publically recognizing those individuals, groups, organizations and companies who have touched so many lives affected by dyslexia and other related disabilities.
There are three ways to recognize someone in the Hall of Honor:
Brick Tribute Wall
IDA is offering engraved bricks for a $250 donation. The bricks, which are part of the facility’s Sylvia O. Richardson Hall of Honor, can be used to honor colleagues, family members, friends, coworkers, volunteers, teachers, and others for any occasion. Executive Director Steve Peregoy said he sees the brick project as a way for members and non-members to make a gift to IDA that will last a for many years to come. “Those whose names are listed on the bricks will actually become part of our national headquarters; for all to recognize and acknowledge for their contribution to the field of dyslexia,” Peregoy said.
IDA Reading Tree
Help the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) grow by honoring someone special with an engraved leaf on IDA’s Reading Tree. Each honoree will literally become part of our national headquarters facility with their engraved leaf on the Reading Tree located in the Sylvia O. Richardson Hall of Honor. IDA is offering engraved leaves for a $500 donation. Leaves can be used to honor colleagues, family members, friends, coworkers, volunteers, teachers, and others for any occasion.
Honor Plaques
In conjunction with the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) capital campaign, which began in 1999, IDA began offering opportunities to honor an individual or organization with an engraved plaque in the Sylvia O. Richardson Hall of Honor at the Association’s headquarters. The Hall of Honor is the first impression of IDA that anyone who enters the building sees and represents some of the most prestigious names in the learning disability field.
The generous gifts received from donations individuals and businesses, members and non-members, educators and tutors, our Board of Directors, schools, sister organizations and the public represent a commitment to changing the landscape of dyslexia. We are especially pleased and grateful for everyone’s continued and dedicated support of our mission.
Individual plaques are still available for a donation of $5000.
