Mission and Goals
The Dyslexia Center of Costa Rica began its informal activities in 2008 and was incorporated in 2009 as a non-profit foundation under Costa Rican law, under the name Fundacion Costarricense de Dislexia, by pediatrician, Dr. Beth Jo Berkowitz.
Membership:
Our membership consists of educators, psychologists, physicians, speech pathologists and families, and is located in the San Jose metropolitan area, the capital of Costa Rica.
Our mission is to TEACH dyslexic individuals, their families, the public, our government and each other about the latest research and evidence-based methodologies for helping children and adults to overcome dyslexia so that they can achieve their full potential.
T. E. A. C. H. --
Training a highly qualified pool of specialists on the early diagnosis and teaching of children and adults with dyslexia using evidence-based methodologies. We completed a 50 hour course in Costa Rica for a multi-disciplinary team of individuals from Costa Rica and Panama. We intend to promote additional national and international conferences, courses and workshops on dyslexia.
Educating the community to promote greater understanding and awareness of the science of dyslexia -- the biological causes of the specific reading difficulty and the specific diagnostic and teaching methods to overcome it. It is our goal to become a resource center for individuals with dyslexia, their families, school systems, medical professionals, policy makers and the community for updated and responsible information on dyslexia in both English and Spanish.
Advocacy for the rights of children and adults to have the necessary accommodations to achieve their goals in the classroom, workplace and community.
Continuing education for specialists in dyslexia to maintain a high standard for diagnosis and teaching of individuals with dyslexia
Hope for all children and adults with dyslexia. With the appropriate assistance, they can overcome their dyslexia and optimize the many talents that often accompany dyslexia. With confidence and proper education, dyslexic individuals can be some of the most important and creative contributors to Costa Rican society.
